Is 2009 Messenger really better than 2011 version...?

Having had nothing but error messages for a couple of weeks with Messenger 2011, I followed Elena's instructions to the letter, uninstalled the 2011 programme, and replaced it with the 2009 version through Softonic. Now I have the identical problem with Messenger 2009 - endless error messages and a total inability to sign on.
Should I simply give up and migrate over to Yahoo...?
